It is with great sadness that the Xiamen Academy of International law announces the passing of Mr. SHI Jiuyong, President of the Curatorium of the Academy, on 18 January 2022 in Beijing, Peoples Republic of China.


Asthe founder and President of the Curatorium of the Academy, Mr. Shi has been involved in the development of the Academy every step of the way. Under his great guidance and vision, the Academy has developed into an international institution aiming to provide highest level education to individuals who are particularly sensitive to the development and use of international law, and to promote academic exchanges among legal communities across the globe, encourage examination of major international legal issues, and by so doing seek ways for world peace and international cooperation.


While this Academy is indeed a testament to Mr. Shi’s dedication and contribution topromoting international law, his contribution reaches far beyond it. As an international lawyer, Mr. Shi served in various important posts home andabroad, such as Legal Adviser to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, China (1980-1993,2011-2022); Member (1987-1993), Chairman (1990) of the International Law Commission, UN and Judge (1994-2010), Vice-President (2000-2003), President (2003-2006) of the International Court of Justice, UN. His high integrity, diligence, and knowledge in international law has earned him praises from his peers. In recognition of his contribution, Mr. Shi was named by the State Council in 2018 as one of the 100 Vanguard of Reform who have made the most important contributions to the reform and opening-up of China since 1978.


His contribution to the promotion of international law in China and the development of international law at large will be remembered and serve as an inspiration for generations to come.
