The first academic salon of 2016 Summer Program was held in the Center for Science and art, Xiamen University on the 6th of July, right after the afternoon session of Prof. Sloane’s lecture. Under the guidance of 2 hostesses Rebecca and Yulu, a total of 8 students from different countries made their presentations.

It started with Foysal from Bangladesh, who offered the participants an overview of the domestic legal system of his home country. The next presenter, Haipeng from China, delivered a fluent speech on the topic of the self-executing doctrine under the U.S. legal system. Then it came Perry from Ghana. He shared his understanding of Ghana’s legal structure and relating international law disputes that Ghana was involved in. His humour lighted the atmosphere up.

Arindrajit Basu from India was the fourth presenter. He talked about the role of the Indian judiciary played in the implementation of International law. Then Aidana from Kazakhstan presented her views about the role of Kazakhstan in international law. After Aidana, Hye-In Kim from Korea brought a vivid introduction on South Korea’s legal system. The last group of presenters were Therese and Duke both from the Philippines. Together they introduced the Philippine legal system to the audience.

After the presentation, the salon was followed up with a “comments and Q&A” session. Participants raised various questions, based on either the former presentation just delivered, or their own understanding about the forefront issues of international law. In this part, the spirit of academic freedom and international friendship was well reflected through communication and even debate. The first academic salon of the 2016 Summer Program was ended in this kind of relaxed and amicable atmosphere.
