Sponsored by Universal Legal Corporation, the first academic salon of the Xiamen Academy of International Law Summer program 2024 was held in Millennium Hotel on July 9, 2024 from 16:00 p.m. to 17:50 p.m. Not long after that, the second academic salon of the Xiamen Academy of International Law Summer program 2024 was held in Maritime Silk-Road Central Legal District located at Maritime World on July 17, 2024 from 15:00 p.m. to 16:00 p.m. Eight participants from different countries and regions shared their academic knowledge, practical experiences related to international law in these salons.
Zou Yuchen, student from Fuzhou University, shared her understanding of cross-border securities regulation and what she has learned about cross-border digital business behavior in this academic salon. She illustrated two dilemmas of cross-border securities regulatory cooperation: the insufficient authority of securities regulators and the relatively simple form of regulatory cooperation. Then, she gave us some helpful solutions to the dilemmas.
Patricia Kirumira Nattabi, student from Xiamen University, shared with us the normative and conceptual framework for sovereign debt in international law. She then expressed her views on what sovereign debt in international governance includes and how sovereign debt functions sustainably.
Jiang Qifan, student from East China University of Political Science and Law, spoke about paradox and dilemma in regulating climate change. He talked about the system of national responsibilities and obligations under the Paris Climate Agreement and international dispute settlement mechanisms, such as ICJ, WTO and ISDS.
Liu Xueqi, lawyer from Deheng Law Firm, introduced China’s attitude towards international commerce arbitration institutions. Then, she discussed what Chinese lawyers should do during the management of international arbitration. This theme was of great interest.
Zhang Chenrong, lawyer from Yingkun Law Firm , pointed out a change in judicial attitudes based on the title "Introduction to judicial review of international commercial arbitration in mainland China".
Cindy Guo, lawyer of the Universal Legal Corporation, took "Overview of China International Investment Arbitration (2019-2023) " as her theme and gave us 10 commandments of Written Advocacy in International Arbitration . This theme was thought-provoking.
Liangjie, lawyer of Kangda Law Firm, delivered a fantastic presentation on whether AI-generated pictures could be counted as works protected by copyright law. She used Li v. Liu Copryright as an example. After rigorous argumentation, she came to the conclusion that if the selection and arrangement of a picture involved reflected the plaintiff’s certain intellectual input, then AI-generated pictures could be counted as works protected by copyright law.
Zhang Chenrong, lawyer of Yingkun Law Firm, shared her view on“The Opportunities, Challenges and Future of AI for lawyers”.Her speech is divided into five parts, i.e.,“Existing legal AI in China”,“The core function of legal AI”,“AI model big data source”,“Future shape of Internet court”and “Future opportunities and challenges for lawyers” .
